Cleats play a big part in football. If players didn't wear them then they would be sliding all over the field. So what is really happening when players use cleats? When a player comes to a sudden stop the cleats dig into the ground forcing the player to come to a stop. The force that cleats use is called static friction. Next, When you tackle somebody in football you go sliding on the ground, static friction is what slows you down so you don't go sliding forever and never stopping according to newtons second law. Also, when you go running into the touchdown then need to stop, friction is what helps slow you down. Also fluid friction plays a roll in football too. When the quarterback throws the ball and when the ball is in the air, fluid friction is acting on it. If there was no fluid friction at all the quarterback would be able to throw the ball a lot further than he usually could.
